Master Gardener Spotlight - Hort Report: Cultivating Community and Supporting Master Gardeners' Growth
Master Gardeners have endless opportunities to share knowledge and time and make a significant impact in communities. In Flathead County, a thriving and engaged group of Master Gardener volunteers contribute to the growing community. Hort Report is a new program that offers Master Gardeners monthly opportunities to learn, connect, and grow with one another.
Flathead County Master Gardeners expressed a desire for a place to connect with like-minded individuals, deepen horticultural knowledge, and socialize. The need for connection was especially pronounced following the isolating years of COVID-19. Kimberly Richardson, the MSU Extension Agriculture Agent in Ravalli County, developed a similar program that inspired the Hort (short for horticulture) Report in Flathead County.
The Hort Report launched in November 2023. Once a month, Master Gardeners gather at locally owned pubs or eateries to learn together. The location rotates throughout the valley, showcasing local establishments and bringing the program exposure in area communities. Each evening begins with trivia related to the night’s topic, giving participants time to order food and settle in for the presentation. Local experts, Extension Agents and Master Gardeners speak on topics ranging from composting and rain gardens to soil health, fruit tree care, pollinator gardens, and edible native plant species. The program provides Master Gardeners an opportunity to share passions and teach the skills and knowledge they’ve gained through the program and their gardening experience.
The Hort Report helps build friendships, strengthen community networks, provide business to local establishments, and foster a shared love of learning. The flexible format makes it adaptable to other communities, and it serves as a creative way to connect people and resources.
