The College of Engineering, through the Engineering Minority Program (EMPower) offers scholarships for incoming freshman Native students. Learn more about EMPower here.

McNair Scholars Program: This program is a student support program assisting qualified students in their quest to obtain a graduate degree, primarily the PhD degree. Once a student is accepted into the program they are eligible for monetary awards given as stipends for student research, are able to travel to conferences and graduate school visits, are required to participate in the GRE workshop and are eligible to receive information as to how to apply and be accepted to graduate school. Scholarships available for underrepresented minority students, low income and first generation college students. Students must be a full time undergraduate student at MSU with a 2.75 GPA (preferably 3.0 GPA) and have completed 60 credits before beginning the summer research/project. Must be a citizen or permanent resident of the USA. Deadline: October 18th.

American Indian student enrolled in the graduate nursing program.

Preference for candidates with demonstrated commitment to & involvement in the American Indian community within Montana. Graduates of St. Labre School will be given preference over equally qualified applicants. The scholarship is intended to cover a recipient's full period of graduate study leading to a Masters Degree in Nursing. Provided the recipient maintains satisfactory progress, the award is renewable for full time study toward completion of the degree.

If there are no qualified candidates, then the College of Nursing may award/use fund's resources to provide undergraduate scholarships for Native American students, or graduate nursing scholarships.

The Scholarship is intended to foster advanced practice nursing education for American Indians who are committed to improving the health of Indians and to serve as role models and advocates for the American Indian Community.

Scholarships awarded through outside entities

ACS Scholars Program: Applicants must be American Indian or of minority background and a full time student at an accredited college, university, or community college. Other criteria include; high academic achievement in chemistry or science (GPA of 3.0 or better), able to demonstrate financial need according to FAFSA form and Student Aid Report (SAR), and intended major in chemistry, biochemistry, or chemical related field. Amount awarded: $2,500 Freshman, $3,000 Sophomores, $5,000 Juniors & Seniors. Deadline: Application cycle Dec 1st- March 1st.

Albert W. Dent Graduate Student Scholarship: Applicants must be a minority student enrolled in their final year of full time study in a healthcare management graduate program- MHA, MPH, MBA in healthcare administration or similar. American Association of Law Libraries Scholarship: Criteria for this scholarship include; a letter from the Admissions Officer of the law school and/or the library school stating the program for which the applicant has been accepted and the date the courses begin, three letters of recommendation, and a personal statement in which the applicant discusses their interest in law librarianship, reason(s) for applying for the scholarship, career goals as a law librarian, and any other pertinent information that the scholarship committee should know. American Indian College Fund: Offers various undergraduate Tribal College and University scholarships. To be eligible the student must be an enrolled tribal member or descendant of a federal or state recognized tribe (parent or grandparent tribally enrolled) and be enrolling full-time in a tribal college, tribal university, or a non-tribal college. Minimum 2.0 GPA or higher and other criteria required based on specific scholarship parameters. Amount awarded: Varies based on scholarship. Deadline: Apply online starting Jan. 1st, due May 31st.

Bureau of Indian Education Higher Education Grant Program: Please check with your Tribal Education Officer before applying separate from the Tribal Education Department. Must be a member of, or at least ¼ degree Indian blood descendant of an American Indian tribe, is accepted into a nationally accredited institution of higher education which provides a course of study conferring the associate of arts or bachelor’s degree and demonstrates financial need.

Catching the Dream: MESBEC Program (math, engineering, science, business, education and computers), Tribal Business Program (business, finance, management, economics, banking, hotel management and related fields in tribal economic development). Applicant must be ¼ or more American Indian and enrolled in a federally recognized, state or terminated tribe. To be competitive students should have an excellent GPA, high ACT or SAT, have work experience, demonstrate leadership and commitment to their Indian Community. Must enroll as a full time student intending to complete a Bachelor degree or higher. Students required to apply to a minimum of 40 other scholarships to be considered. Daughters of the American Revolution’s: DAR American Indian Scholarships. ESA Foundation Computer & Video Game Scholarship: This scholarship is available to women or minority students pursuing degrees leading to careers in computer and video game arts (high school seniors must already be accepted into a program). Enrolling or enrolled in a full time undergraduate course of study at an accredited four-year college or university in the United States and maintain a grade point average of 2.75 or above on a 4.0 scale (or its equivalent). Gates Millennium Scholars: Applicant must be an enrolled tribal member or descendant who will be enrolling as a full time degree seeking student. To be eligible a student must have a 3.3 GPA (unweighted), be Federal Pell Grant eligible, exhibit leadership skills, participation in community service, and extracurricular activities. Horatio Alger Montana Scholarship Program: The Horatio Alger Montana Scholarship program is funded through the generosity of the Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation. To be eligible students must be enrolled full time as a high school senior, exhibit a strong commitment to pursue and complete a bachelor’s degree, are involved in co-curricular and community service activities, exhibit financial need, maintain a GPA of 2.0, and is a resident of Montana. Indian Health Services Health Professionals Programs: Applicants for the Health Professions Scholarship must be enrolled in a federally recognized tribe. There is a service obligation upon completion. Applicants for the Preparatory and Pre-Graduate Scholarship can be enrolled in a federally or state recognized tribe or be a 1st or 2nd degree descendant of a tribal member. Other scholarship criteria include a 2.0 GPA and intent to serve Indian people as a health professional. Amount awarded: Scholarship= tuition and required fees (plus living expenses for Health Professions Scholarship recipients). Deadline: March 28th for new applicants.

AICPA Minority Accounting Students Scholarships: GPA and major requirement. Applicant must be a member of an underrepresented minority group and be enrolled full time as an undergraduate or graduate student pursuing an accounting related major and planning to pursue the CPA licensure but not presently be a CPA. At least 20 hours of college coursework must be completed to be eligible. The business program must be accredited by the AACSB and/or ACBSP. Indian Health Services Health Professionals Programs: GPA and community service upon award requirement. Applicants for the Health Professions Scholarship must be enrolled in a federally recognized tribe. McNair Scholars ProgramGPA requirement, for undergraduates seeking graduate degree. This program is a student support program assisting qualified students in their quest to obtain a graduate degree, primarily the PhD degree. Once a student is accepted into the program they are eligible for monetary awards given as stipends for student research, are able to travel to conferences and graduate school visits, are required to participate in the GRE workshop and are eligible to receive information as to how to apply and be accepted to graduate school. The Actuarial Diversity Scholarship: GPA and Major requirement. Each applicant must have at least one birth parent who is a member of one of the following minority groups: Black/African American, Hispanic, Native American Indian. Applicants must also have a minimum GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale), emphasis on math or actuarial courses. High school seniors must have a minimum ACT math score of 28 or SAT math score of 600. Students must have intent on pursuing a career in the actuarial profession. Applicants must fulfill all the requirements. Amount awarded: $2,000+. Deadline: May 3rd.

APS Scholarship for Minorities: Applicant must be Native American and a US Citizen who plans on majoring in physics. High school senior, college freshman or sophomores are eligible to apply. ACS Scholars Program: GPA and major success requirement. Applicants must be American Indian or of minority background and a full time student at an accredited college, university, or community college. Other criteria include; high academic achievement in chemistry or science (GPA of 3.0 or better), able to demonstrate financial need according to FAFSA form and Student Aid Report (SAR), and intended major in chemistry, biochemistry, or chemical related field. Minorities in Hospitality Scholars ProgramMajor requirement. Applicant must be enrolled in an accredited college or university with major in the hospitality field. American Association of Law Libraries Scholarship: Major requirement. Criteria for this scholarship include; a letter from the Admissions Officer of the law school and/or the library school stating the program for which the applicant has been accepted and the date the courses begin, three letters of recommendation, and a personal statement in which the applicant discusses their interest in law librarianship, reason(s) for applying for the scholarship, career goals as a law librarian, and any other pertinent information that the scholarship committee should know. Robert Raskind Nursing Scholarshipmajor requirement.

American Indian student enrolled in the graduate nursing program.

Preference for candidates with demonstrated commitment to & involvement in the American Indian community within Montana. Graduates of St. Labre School will be given preference over equally qualified applicants. The scholarship is intended to cover a recipient's full period of graduate study leading to a Masters Degree in Nursing. Provided the recipient maintains satisfactory progress, the award is renewable for full time study toward completion of the degree.

If there are no qualified candidates, then the College of Nursing may award/use fund's resources to provide undergraduate scholarships for Native American students, or graduate nursing scholarships.

The Scholarship is intended to foster advanced practice nursing education for American Indians who are committed to improving the health of Indians and to serve as role models and advocates for the American Indian Community.

Sloan Indigenous Graduate Partnership

The Montana University System SIGP Program was established in the fall of 2005. Indigenous (Native American, Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian with U.S. citizenship) graduate students pursuing degrees in a science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) discipline at MSU may be eligible to apply for the scholarship program established by the A.P. Sloan Foundation. The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation funds SIGP at our partner institutions. SIGP grant cycles are 3 years long; MSU will apply for funding renewal for AY 2017-18.
