Apply for VA education benefits
New Applicants/First Time Using A VA Benefit
If you are a new VA education benefits applicant, you collected benefits only while on active duty, or you are applying for benefits under a program different from that which you used in the past, you must complete an Application for Education Benefits, VA Form 22-1990 on the Department of Veterans Affairs website at va.gov.
If you have already completed an application and have received a Certificate of Eligibility, bring it to the Veteran Support Center upon your arrival to MSU.
All Students
Certificates/Letters of Eligibility are to be provided to the Veteran Support Center by the end of a student's first semester at the university in order to be processed for any farther semesters usage of benefits.
In order to receive monthly education benefits while enrolled in classes at MSU-Bozeman, student's enrollment must be certified each term by the Certifying Official in the MSU-Bozeman Veterans Support Center. Students using benefits must notify the Veteran Support Center every term they intend to attend classes via a 'returning student' form/request that can be acquired by coming into the Veteran Support Center. Students may submit this request online (link below) or request the paper form via email.
New Students
For forms/information, please email us or visit the office; vets@montana.edu or call 406-994-3661. Our intake forms can requested at any time. Students must be registered for their classes for these forms to be available so please ensure this is completed prior to requesting them.
Students utilizing Chapter 30, 31, 33, or 35, 1606, Active-duty service members stationed in Montana, or Members of the Montana National Guard are eligible for in-state tuition rates, this will be applied as we process students paperwork but please check with our staff if you meet one of these conditions and have not seen your tuition rates change if they were previously out-of-state.
Prior Recipients & Transferring to MSU
If you have collected VA education benefits prior to attending MSU and wish to use the same chapter benefit, it will not be necessary for you to reapply for benefits though the VA's website. Simply drop by the MSU-Bozeman Veteran Support Center after registering for classes, request certification for VA Education Benefits, or do so online with the link below. You will need to Change your School or Program for your benefit to function if you are changing from a prior institution to MSU. This will also update your certificate of eligibility in your VA profile.
Online New & Returning Benefit Requests
Note: This is a new system, bugs can occur. This resource will not work if you have not registered for classes for the desired term. Do not submit more than one request per term. If you encounter any issues, please contact our office and inform us so we can fix them.
