MEETING MINUTES OF THE UNIVERSITY FACILITIES PLANNING BOARD

November 21, 2023

ITEM No. 1 - APPROVAL OF NOTES

The meeting minutes from October 26th, 2023, were unanimously approved.

ITEM No. 2 - INFORMATIONAL - Gianforte Hall Artist Selection

Presenter: Grey Williams, Campus Planner

The Gianforte Hall art selection committee has completed the process of procuring an artist for the upcoming construction of the building The committee put out a call for artists and reviewed submissions from 6 different artists, each with unique ideas related to the project. The committee has chosen artist Rob Ley, a renowned public artist with a history of creating public art pieces around the United States. The design team for the project will work with him moving forward to integrate the art piece into the project.

Timeline

  • Call for artists beginning May 12th, 2023
  • June 12th, 2023, Artist qualifications and proposals due
  • July 17th, 2023, Artist selected and given notice

  • Kinetic environments, how art engages and interacts with local environments

Brett Gunnink asked what the budget for art is for Gianforte Hall. Richard Rudnicki answered that the budget is $375,000.

Tom Rogers questioned how many total submissions were received by the committee. Richard Rudnicki answered that while numerous submissions were received the committee had 6 finalists, with the chosen artist being picked due to factors such as experience and past public works of a large scale.

Durward Sobek asked for more clarity regarding the art selection process, and the subcommittee structure related to PAAC and UFPB. Richard Rudnicki provided more information on the process such as how selection committees are formed in relation to projects, the process of reviewing submissions, and how the process works through PAAC and UFPB.

Marguerite Kibodeaux asked who the ASMSU representative was for this process and what ASMSUs role in art selection is in general. Richard Rudnicki answered that there is a new rep from ASMSU for every project and that their role is the same as other selection committee members, and that students provide a differing prospective than faculty and staff.

ITEM No. 3 - INFORMATIONAL - Grant Street Artist Selection

Presenter: Grey Williams, Campus Planner

The Grant Street Improvements Project art selection committee has completed the process of procuring an artist for the upcoming reconfiguration of Grant Street into a pedestrian corridor. The committee put out a call for artists and reviewed submissions from over 10 different artists, each with unique ideas related to the project. The committee has chosen artist Dana Kuglin, a Montana State University graduate, with a history of creating public art pieces around Montana and Utah and will work with him moving forward in the process of the project.

  • Call for artists beginning August 11th, 2023
  • September 11th, 2023, Artist qualifications and proposals due
  • October 20th, 2023, Artist selected and given notice

Artist/Art

  • Oversized local flora and fauna
  • Change viewer/user perspective and interaction with the environment
  • Recycled, repurposed, and manmade objects

Brett Gunnink asked about the phasing of the Grant Street project. Richard Rudnicki clarified the planned phasing of the project and how it will integrate with the art.

Richard Rudnicki also provided more information related to the artist and new developments with the artist. This included that 5 pieces were planned for Grant Street, and that the selected artist is excited to get to work and is passionate about the project.

Grant Petersen introduced 2 new PDC staff members, Jennisse Waters and Erica Jorgensen, to the board.
