ITEM No. 4 – INFORMATIONAL – MOR Montana Historic Preservation Grant Program

John How presented the recommendation to approve the Natural Hazard Structural Mitigation Initiative as currently designed.

 

The Museum of the Rockies facilities are comprised of several adjoining buildings constructed from 1970 to 2014.  The design team has been tasked with creating roof strengthening solutions to allow the existing facility to remain in place with artifacts unharmed. The scope of work will include new roof structures and /or strengthening of the existing roof structures to assist with snow loading, seismic stability and mitigation of current water penetration issues.

 

If awarded, the grant will cover the first phase of construction which includes a superstructure that will stretch from the 1986 addition west, past the 1971 History home edition, to the Traveling Exhibit Hall to the south and cover part of the 1974 Welcome to Yellowstone and Native American Exhibit Hall to the north. The structure will have a series of eight-foot deep steel columns supporting a steel deck. Phase two will include the deconstruction of the 1974 roof and replacement with the new structure (photos presented). 

 

The grant submission deadline is February 28, 2020. Further approvals will come before UFPB if the Museum of the Rockies (MOR) is successful in obtaining a grant for the project.

 

Cassie Behm moved to approve the recommendation to approve the proposal as presented.

Leslie Schmidt seconded the motion.

ITEM No. 5 – INFORMATIONAL – Romney Oval Fence Signage

John How presented the plan to install five vinyl banners at various points on the fence surrounding the Romney Oval landscaping project. 

 

Messaging on the banners will provide an overview of the geothermal drilling and infrastructure plan which will begin in March (content and graphics presented). Campus Planning is working with University Communications (UC) on the design and will include a graphic created by UC to briefly depict and explain our energy saving efforts. The banners will be placed in five strategic locations along the fence to maximize visibility.

 

A suggestion was made to place emphasis on the reduction in carbon emissions and include a comparison statistic.
