All Admitted Students
All students with non-immigrant visas (F-1 or J-1) must provide the following for MSU to issue either the I-20 or DS-2019 to students:
1. Copy of valid passport name/photo page (and any dependent(s))
2. Completed copy of the International Financial Certificate
- The Financial Certificate guarantees the required minimum funds, in U.S. dollars, will be available to the student during the first academic year. Applicants must also plan to meet expenses for subsequent years of study.
- A Financial Certificate is required for each sponsor.
3. Evidence of financial support in the form of a letter, certificate(s), or statement(s) from a bank or lending institution; scholarships/assistantships*
- If providing letter, certificate, or statement from a bank or lending institution,
the statement MUST
- Show an account balance of at least $51,875 for undergraduate students and $42,933 for graduate students
- Be dated within one year of the program start date.
- Be printed on the financial institution’s official letterhead
- State the financial institution’s name (and branch)
- Indicate the account holder’s name
- Clearly show the account type, account balance, and currency
- Have a statement from the bank or lending institution showing that these assets can be converted to cash or withdrawn easily when this is not evident by the statement or the account type
- *ONLY for students offered scholarship/assistantship: You can deduct the amount you are awarded from the minimum amount we require for the bank statement
While the documents listed above are not required for an admission decision, the I-20 (F-1) or DS-2019 (J-1) forms cannot be issued until the Financial Certificate, Proof of Funds, and a color copy of a valid passport are received. These documents must be originals with original signatures and seals. Additional documents may be requested as necessary.
