If members currently do not have a horse but expect to have one in the future and want to participate in other horse projects, they should enroll in this project. A “Horseless Horse” project member can also participate in horse judging and horse career projects without their own horse.

Horseless Horse, Level 1

In level one, youth learn how to identify parts of a horse, horse behavior, horse breeds, costs of raising a horse, how to care for a horse, horse facilities, horse safety rules and more. Youth can also practice public speaking, take tours, and attend horse shows and clinics.

Complete at least seven required and optional activities per year. It may take three years to complete this level.

Horseless Horse, Level 2

In level two, youth will learn more about acquiring and raising a horse, including selecting a horse, horse nutrition and care, equine teeth and bones, judging, including giving oral reasons and much more.

Horseless Horse, Level 3

In this level, youth explore horse reproduction, diseases, healthcare and pasture management. Members will learn about appropriate shelters and financial planning and be equipped to teach others about horses.

Horseless Horse, Level 4

In this level, youth will learn nine basic riding skills and 10 horsemanship skills. They will also gain knowledge in training techniques, trail riding and the proper selection and use of tack.

Horseless Horse, Level 5

In level five, youth learn more advanced riding skills. They will also learn the Quarter System for horse showing, proper horseshowmanship tactics, and ethics and leadership.
