History

The Center for the Communication of Science (CCS) is based at Montana State University in Bozeman, within the College of Arts and Architecture. The Montana University System Board of Regents approved CCS in September 2015. In 2026, CCS was relaunched to connect researchers, artists, and the public.

Mission

The Center for the Communication of Science connects knowledge across disciplines and with the public, so that people can understand, engage with, and shape the research and technology changing Montana and the world. CCS brings artists, scientists, and the public together to create work that communicates research.

Core Goals

Objectives

Researchers have estimated that the general public’s scientific comprehension rate is about 25%. Clearly there is a need for improved, cutting-edge communication of scientific research that reaches across political and cultural groups and generates new knowledge in the arts and the sciences. This requires advanced artscience experimentation and translation mixed with innovative science communication that complements and augments scientific research.

Interdisciplinary research and development

  • To create original films, visual art and design, photography, music, writing, and interactive design (e.g. web, games, mobile apps) directly related to research in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
  • Develop research on the effective communication of science within the MUS system, nationally and internationally.

Interdisciplinary dissemination

  • To disseminate productions developed by CCS to the public through the web, public media, screenings, exhibitions, performances and installations pertinent to STEM research.

Interdisciplinary education

  • CCS Speaker Series: To provide a forum for speakers of high- performing, interdisciplinary research related to Art+Science Communication.
  • To create workshops and develop instructional programs for science faculty focused on working with visual / auditory media and media makers.
  • To be able to research, educate and disseminate our research in multiple fields, has the potential for the broadest impact, influence, and reverberation.
