Students are in control over who has access to their profile. Handshake provides three profile privacy options for student accounts:

  • Community
  • Employers
  • Private.

Community

a version of your Handshake profile that can be viewed by anyone, even if they don’t have a Handshake account. This feature is designed to help you:

  • Connect with employers and recruiters through email or other external channels.
  • Get advice from mentors, alumni, or professionals who may not be on Handshake.
  • Showcase your work experience and interests by displaying your projects and organizations in a rich, multimedia format.
  • Diversify your digital presence, providing you with more visibility and networking opportunities.

Once you've made your profile public and shareable, you can distribute it via email, messages, or social media to broaden your reach.

Note: The public version of your profile is a condensed version. Certain sensitive details, such as your GPA or other private information, will not be visible to the public. Your public profile will showcase the following sections you've filled out on your profile: Summary, Skills, Work experience, Education, Organizations, Projects, and Languages.

Make your profile public

To make your Handshake profile public, follow the below steps:

  1. Log in to your Handshake account.
  2. Click on your profile icon in the upper-right corner of the page, then select Settingsfrom the dropdown menu.
  3. Scroll down to the Privacy section and check the box next to “I want my profile to be public and shareable outside of Handshake.”
  4. Click the black button Save Update, located at the bottom of the page to confirm the changes.

Employers

With the Employers option selected:

  • You cannot message students and alumni with similar experience
  • You can receive messages about job opportunities from potential employers
  • You can browse jobs and other resources from Handshake or your school
  • Your profile will be visible to employers

If you'd prefer not to be visible to other students/alumni, you may select the Employers privacy option. This enables employers approved at your school in Handshake to discover your profile and connect with you via messages or inviting you to apply.

You can register for virtual events hosted outside of Handshake with a different provider. You can also register for virtual fairs in Handshake and sign up for only employer-hosted 1:1 sessions (one recruiter and one student). If you'd like to sign up for group sessions or register for virtual events that are hosted in Handshake, you'll be prompted to update your privacy setting to Community.

Private

  • You cannot message students and alumni with similar experience
  • You cannot receive messages about job opportunities from potential employers
  • You can browse jobs and other resources from Handshake or your school
  • Your profile will not be visible to the employers you apply for jobs to

If you choose to keep your profile Private, you can search for and apply for jobs, register for in-person events and fairs, and explore career paths. If your school is partnered with Handshake, you can interact with the Career Center via appointments, experiences, surveys, First Destination Surveys, and school posted resources.
