ADHD Medication Management at MSU
Student Health Services (SHS) follows a structured process before prescribing and
managing ADHD medications. Please review the steps below before scheduling.
Step 1: Provide Documentation of Your Diagnosis
A formal ADHD evaluation from a qualified specialist is required before SHS can prescribe
stimulant medication.
- SHS does not perform ADHD evaluations.
- Online-only evaluations are not accepted.
- Need help finding a provider? Contact SHS for a list of local resources.
Step 2: Submit Your Records
Upload the following through the patient portal at least 1-2 weeks before you'd like
an appointment:
- Formal ADHD evaluation report
- Records from your current or most recent prescribing provider, including medication history, dose, and duration of treatment
An SHS provider will review your records before an appointment can be scheduled.
If additional information is needed, we'll let you know. Once your records have been
reviewed and approved, our scheduling team will contact you to schedule an appointment.
Step 3: Attend Your Appointment
During your appointment, your provider will:
- Review your evaluation and treatment history
- Discuss your current medications and concerns
- Complete required safety assessments
- Develop a treatment plan, which may include medication adjustments or non-stimulant treatment options
Records must be reviewed before stimulant medications can be prescribed. Please plan
ahead.
Step 4: Ongoing ADHD Medication Management
Stimulant medications are controlled substances and require ongoing monitoring.
- Automatic refills are not available. Each prescription requires provider approval.
- Schedule follow-up appointments before you run out of medication.
- Allow at least 72 hours for pharmacy processing.
- Use one pharmacy for all stimulant prescriptions.
- Some insurance plans require prior authorization, which may delay your prescription.
- An annual urine drug screen is required for patients prescribed stimulant medications.
- A stimulant treatment agreement is required before starting stimulant medication.
Plan Ahead
Record review, appointments, insurance authorizations, and pharmacy processing can
take time. We recommend starting the process several weeks before you need medication.
