Montana State University faculty and researchers have access to a vast array of mechanisms to help support their research and creative activities. Resources include internal support and seed funding, along with assistance in identifying external sponsors consisting of federal agencies, state agencies, private foundations, and corporations. In addition, the Office of Research Development (ORD) assists faculty and staff in navigating sponsors’ guidelines, requirements, and submission processes.


Internal Research Funding Opportunities

Core Facilities Grant Program (CFGP)

The Office of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development (VPRED) is pleased to announce this request for proposals (RFP) to support RED-approved core facilities. The purpose of this RFP is to support core facilities that serve as critical infrastructure for the research and scholarly enterprise.

Deadline: Friday, Oct. 4, 2024, 5:00 p.m. MST
Decision: November 22, 2024           Award Start: January 3, 2025

Proposal Enhancement Grant (PEG) program

The PEG program aims to increase the competitiveness of research proposals submitted to external sponsors via contracted professional services, external expert review, and more. Full-time faculty and research scientists are eligible to apply. Applications are accepted year-round and reviewed on a rolling basis.

Research Collaborative Grant Program (RCGP)

The Research Collaborative Grant is an opportunity to create research collaboratives of two or more faculty from any department/discipline to catalyze research and scholarly activities around a theme chosen by the group. Themes may be broad, such as risk, rurality, or wellbeing; or more specific, such as a cultural study, engineering problem, or bioscience innovation.

Award Start: Jan. 15, 2025

Research Expansion Funds (REF) Grant Program

The Research Expansion Funds (REF) program will support new preliminary data or the development of new research methods or procedures that will be used in subsequent proposals to external funding sources. Full-time faculty at Montana State University who have earned terminal degrees are eligible to apply.
Fall deadline: Sept. 27, 2024. Spring deadline: Feb. 14, 2025.

Research Using MSU’s Animal Resource Center’s Jamaican Fruit Bats

NEW! The Office of Research and Economic Development (RED) is seeking proposals from faculty and research scientists at Montana State University (MSU) for research that utilizes MSU’s Animal Resource Center’s Jamaican fruit bats. RED seeks to catalyze research using MSU’s bat colony to advance current research or allow exploratory work in a new area of research.
Deadline: Open call through Nov. 1, 2024.

Scholarship & Creativity (S&C) Grant Program

The Scholarship & Creativity Grant (S&C) program supports scholarship and creative activity in the arts, humanities and social sciences. Full-time tenure-track faculty at Montana State University who have earned terminal degrees are eligible to apply. Fall deadline: Sept. 27, 2024. Spring deadline: February 14, 2025.
