Fox Faculty Award
Gregory Young
Gregory Young, a professor in the School of Music in the College of Arts and Architecture, has won the Fox Faculty Award, which recognizes a faculty member for excellence in teaching, mentorship, research, scholarship and creativity. Sponsored by the Martin Fox Family and the Office of Academic Affairs, the award includes a $3,325 honorarium.
As a clarinet professor, Young has led student ensembles that have toured overseas and has grown his applied studio through recruiting and outreach. Outside of MSU, Young regularly performs and teaches workshops. He has been a consistent leader of undergraduate research at MSU, including developing the Undergraduate Scholars Program, the first campus-wide undergraduate research program at a public university in the North America. His undergraduate students have presented at every World Congress on Undergraduate Research, said Dean Adams, dean of the College of Arts and Architecture, in nominating Young for this award. Young has also worked with students to produce books on research and composition. Overall, Young has co-authored or edited 11 books, several book chapters and numerous peer-reviewed journal articles.
“His work over the past several years is literally writing the curriculum for undergraduate research in the arts and humanities,” Adams said.
