Dear Bobcat Parent and Family Members, You would think I would be less sensitive to it by now, but every year I am moved by the emotions that surface when the moms and dads say goodbye to their student who is off to college. I still vividly remember my mom and dad taking me to campus, my dad slipping me a $20 bill and telling me how proud he was of me, and the feelings I had being on "my own" for the very first time. It was my first glimpse of adulthood. I recognize this fall will be a new chapter for our parents and family members who are dropping off their student on campus for the first time. I'd like to share a few links that you may find helpful--the first is the website of a mentor of mine, Jeffrey Arnett, who is a national scholar on emerging adulthood. The other is a New York Times article from last year with thoughtful suggestions for how to cope with the empty chair at the table. Putting emotions aside for a moment, let's put some logistics front and center: Move-In Day is tomorrow. Please bring your sense of humor. It'll be your last chance, dads, to embarrass your son or daughter with a corny joke on a crowded elevator! And MSU Debut kicks in right away with events like the Welcome BBQ and Convocation to help your student connect with others on campus. You and your family members are welcome to join all of these events! Once your student is moved in and you have time for exploring, you might consider taking in a walking trail in town, a canyon hike or a stroll along Bozeman's Main Street. If you haven't already, please review the recommended routes to campus and get the download link for a Move-In Day parking permit. And as an FYI, the City of Bozeman has a number of street enhancement projects underway , so check here for updates and detours around town. We're going to have a great fall! Matthew R. Caires, P.S. Did you know that MSU parents and family members are always invited to attend MSU Alumni events? For our parents and families in Boise, please consider attending the upcoming Boise Valley Chapter: Inside Engineering event on September 12, 2018. |
