April 4th, 2019
Dear Bobcat Parent and Family Members,Ah, spring. It's in full swing in Bozeman. We're starting to see the first daffodils and tulips fight their way through the remaining snowdrifts and ice. And some students are sporting shorts and flip-flops, even though average temp highs are barely 50? F most days. Everyone is certainly ready for this season of change. It can also be a season of highs and lows for our students. As we move into the last four weeks of the academic year, your student may be facing the reality that one of their courses hasn't gone very well. Students still have the chance to withdraw from a class (or all of their classes) until April 11th. Withdrawing from a course leaves a "W" on the student's transcript. Though a "W" does not help or hurt a student's GPA, there are academic implications for the student who may need to retake the class. For this reason, it is to their advantage that students consult with their academic advisor prior to withdrawing from a class. Speaking of academic advisors: Has your student set up a meeting with their advisor to register for summer or fall semester? Course registration is happening right now, and I recommend you ask your student if they have followed through with their academic advising appointment. For those parents and family members who have a student graduating in May -congratulations and high fives to you! Details about commencement ceremonies, regalia, photo opportunities and more are provided on the Registrar's website. For parents, family and guests attending commencement, the Registrar also links you specifically to additional information about lodging, parking on campus and seating at ceremonies. Finally, if you have a student living in the Residence Halls, it's not too early to plan how you might support their move-out process. MSU requires students to complete the move-out process within 72 hours of their last final exam. You can review the final exam schedule and discuss travel and transportation arrangements with your student as they take next steps in their college career. Questions? Please don't hesitate to be in touch. Sincerely, Matthew R. Caires Dean of Students |
