Course Description:
This clinical course focuses on the management of mental health problems with a focus on the conceptual and theoretical foundations evaluating, managing, educating, and guiding individuals and families with mental health problems or psychiatric disorders who have acute and/or chronic mental health needs. Treatment plans are analyzed and created to minimize the development of complications and promote function and quality of life using psychotherapeutic modalities for the individual and family while incoporating appropriate prescriptive, complimentary, and alternative treatments. The application of relevant evidence-based findings to develop practice guidelines and improve practice and the practice environment is emphasized. Additional focus placed on the management of women of childbearing age and individuals with substance use disorders in complex health and situational transitions. This course combines treatmen modalities including couples' psychotherapy, family psychotherapy, and brief psychotherapy while integrating multicultural skills for health promotion, clinical prevention, and management of mental health problems. Alternative treatment methods and modalities will also be explored. Current standards of care are emphasized.
Catalog Descripton:
This clinical course focuses on management of individuals/ families with acute/chronic mental health needs using psychotherapeutic modalities, appropriate prescriptive treatments, couples and family therapy, and CAM (Complimentary Alternative Medicine) treatments. Focus placed on women of childbearing age and substance use disorders.
Course Learning Outcomes: Upon completing this course, the student will be able to:
- Verbalize an understanding of the role of family-based psychotherapy.
- Develop family-based assessment and treatments plans with consideration of patient outcomes.
- Utilize therapeutic communication during patient and professional interactions to in the use of psychoeducation.

- Satisfactory clinical preceptor evaluations from the therapy preceptor and medication management preceptors. (CLO 1,3)
- Discuss case studies with therapies involving women of childbearing years and individuals with substance use disorders. (CLO 1,2,3)
- Successfully complete psychopharmacology assignments. (CLO 2)
- Complete Case Formulation Initial and Follow Up documents which include therapy on clinical patients throughout the semester. (CLO 1,2)

Resources for psychotropic medications for pregnant and lactating females, current standards of care for substance abuse treatment, ethical dilemmas with these two populations, billings and coding, ICD-10 codes, CPT codes, charting.
Recommended Clinical Experiences/Sites:
Addiction treatment facilities, sites who treat pregnant women, and women's mental health facilities. 180 total hours with 120 hours of APRN medications management and 60 hours of therapy (suggested couples and family therapy).
