Course Description:

This course focuses on the management of mental health problems with a focus on the conceptual and theoretical foundations evaluating, managing, educating, and guiding individuals and families with mental health problems or psychiatric disorders who have acute and/or chronic mental health needs. Treatment plans are analyzed and created to minimize the development of complications and promote function and quality of life using psychotherapeutic modalities for the individual and family while incorporating appropriate prescriptive and complementary/alternative treatments. The application of relevant evidence-based findings to develop practice guidelines and improve practice and the practice environment is stressed. Additional focus placed on the management of women of childbearing age and individuals with substance use disorders in complex health and situational transitions. This course emphasizes the patient's personal lifestyle, cultural, spiritual, ethical, legal, educational, and financial constraints when formulating treatment plans. Various treatment modalities are combined including couple psychotherapy, family psychotherapy, and brief psychotherapy while integrating multicultural skills for health promotion, clinical prevention, and management of mental health problems. Alternative treatments methods and modalities will also be explored. Current standards of care are emphasized.

Catalog Description:

This course focuses on the management of individuals/families with mental health problems who have acute/ chronic mental health needs using psychotherapeutic modalities while incorporating appropriate prescriptive and CAM (Complimentary Alternative Medicine) treatments. Focus placed on women of childbearing age and substance use disorders. Therapy focuses on couples and families therapy treatments.

Course Learning Outcomes: Upon completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Verbalize an understanding of the role of family-based psychotherapy.
  2. Develop family-based assessment and treatment plans with consideration of patient outcomes.
  3. Develop a comprehensive treatment plan for an individual incorporating individual, family, and group therapies including cultural, spiritual, ethical, and financial considerations.
