The Peace Corps Prep Program

Montana State University is proud to offer The Peace Corps Prep Certificate Program to all undergraduate students. The Peace Corps Prep program was established in 2007. It aims to meet the demand for Peace Corps volunteers with a broad and relevant set of expertise and to support institutions’ efforts to provide substantive, globally focused experiences for their students. In its inception, the Prep Program was conceived for undergraduate students wishing to apply for Peace Corps volunteer positions after graduation, though it does not guarantee acceptance into the Peace Corps. Today it is open to all undergraduates.

Since President John F. Kennedy established the Peace Corps in 1961, more than 230,000 Americans of all ages have served in 141 countries worldwide. President Kennedy created the Peace Corps to allow a global exchange of skills and ideas and the individual experiences of Americans in developing countries to contribute to a healthier and safer world.

At MSU, the Peace Corps Prep program is housed in the Department of Modern Languages. The program is open to all majors, whether they intend to apply to the Peace Corps or not. Meet today with the Peace Corps Prep Coordinator, Dr. James Martin (Gaines 115B jameswm@montana.edu), to start building the roadmap for your certificate.

The Peace Corps Prep Program creates a framework for students across campus to build four competencies through the integration of coursework, hands-on experience and professional/leadership development. The four competencies are: 1) training and experience in a work sector, 2) foreign language skills, 3) intercultural competence, and 4) professional and leadership development. Students pursuing the Prep Program Certificate focus on one of the following areas for the first competency: education, health, environment, agriculture, youth in development, and community economic development.

With strategic planning, MSU students can easily earn the Prep Certificate along with their major. Upon completion of the program, students receive a certificate from the Peace Corps and a competitive edge when applying for Peace Corps service as well as for other global engagement opportunities and career paths.
