In 1986 the city of Red Lodge voted on three sub-options. The first was term length: four years (373 votes) or two years (656). The second was districted elections (605 votes) or at-large and districted elections (416 votes). The third was general government powers (415 votes) or self-government powers (529 votes)
In 2002 At the November 5 general election, a charter with the commission- executive plan of government was approved by a vote of 522 for the new charter and 384 for the existing commission-executive form of government.
