In 1986 the city of Livingston decided between two-year terms (1, 365 votes) and four-year terms (1, 097 votes).

In 2003 Livingston voters amended their commission-manager form of government by adopting four-year terms of office for the city commissioners. The vote at the November 4 municipal election was 303 for the existing two-year terms and 350 for the proposed four-year terms of office.
