In 1996 the city of Hardin voted on the sub-option of partisan elections (282 votes) or nonpartisan elections (629 votes).
In 1999 at the September 14 primary election, voters were asked whether they wished to continue to elect their city officials on a partisan basis or change to a nonpartisan election of city officials. The nonpartisan option was approved by a vote of 49 to 10.
In 2016 the city of Hardin spent $18,000 on voter review.
