In 1997 three amendments were on the November 8, ballot: (1) changing the language regarding the oath of office from “The oath of office shall be sworn by the City Judge” to “the oath of office shall be sworn to by the City Judge”; (2) whether or not to pay the mayor and council members; and (3) providing for removal of city council members for conviction of a crime of moral turpitude. Amendment 1 passed by a vote of 1,130 in favor, and 215 against. Amendment 2 was defeated by a vote of 608 in favor, and 777 against. Amendment 3 passed by a vote of 1,224 in favor, and 147 against.
