The Graduation and Admission Requirements Committee (GARC) considers petitions from students seeking waivers of established admission and graduation requirements. The Committee is composed of the Vice Procost for Academic Affairs (shairperson), the Registrar, the Director of Admissions, and the Assistant Dean of the College in which the student is enrolled.

Write a letter to the GARC Committee explaining your request.

Include: 

  • Date of the request
  • Student's full legal name
  • Student's mailing address and student e-mail address
  • Student ID number
  • Student's College and major
  • A description of the petition (e.g., what is being requested)
  • The basis for the request
  • Student's signature

Tip: Be clear and specific about why your situation is unique and should be considered.

In your introduction, explain the situation and what you are petitioning and why. Explain what the body of your letter will include.

In the body of your letter present the supporting information for your petition. If including support or other evidence for your petition, describe that here.

Conclude your letter. Include appreciation for reviewing materials and considering petition request.

Collect documents that support your petition. The committee may request for the documentation and evaluate for petition.

These may include:

  • DegreeWorks worksheet
  • Unofficial transcript
  • Course syllabi
  • Advisor letters
  • Department letters

At their discretion, student's may submit additional documentation that they believe is relevant to their request, such as transcripts, course descriptions, letters from the Office of Disability Services when the request is related to a disability accommodation, etc. The Committee may request additional documentation from the student, or solicit input from university personnel, in evaluating the petition.

Meet with your advisor to review your petition.

Your advisor will review your materials and sign the petition to confirm that you met them.

Important: The signature confirms your conversation. It does not mean your advisor supports or approves your petition.

Meet with the College of Arts and Architecture Assistant Dean, Jen Dunn to review your petition.

Send your petition and supporting documents to CAA Assitant Dean, Jen Dunn at jendunn@montana.edu or request a meeing to discuss your petition.

She will review your materials and sign the petition to confirm that you met with her.

Important: the signature confirms your conversation. It does not mean your petition is approved.

Submit your completed petition and all supporting documents to the Office of the Registrar. You can email them to registrar@montana.edu or drop them off at 111 Montana Hall.

Before submitting, make sure you have:

  • Completed cover sheet with required signatures
  • Petition Letter
  • Supporting Documents
  • Any additional forms

Important: The student is responsible for submitting the completed GARC petition.

Once the petition is received, the Committee wil review the information and notify the student if the petition is granted or denied, and the basis for the decision. This will take up to four weeks. The GARC finding is the final campus decision.
