CERC Petitions
Complete the student portion of the Official CERC Request Form.
- Print the CERC Petition Sheet or save as PDF.
- Fill in your student informaiton.
- Identify the Core course or requirement you are requesting a substitution or waiver for.
- Print the completed form or save as pdf.
The Core Equivalency Review Committee (CERC) considers appeals and/or petitions from students seeking waivers or substitutions of established core course requirements. These appeals are organized with the support of your academic department advisor.
Write a letter explaining the Core course or requirement you are requesting a substitution or waiver for.
Include:
- The Core course or requirement in question. Here is the MSU Core General Curriculum Requirements.
- Why you are requesting a substitution or waiver.
- Evidence supporting your request. This usually includes a syllabus, course description, or some type of documentation that demonstrates learning outcome alignment.
- How your previous coursework or experience meets the required learning outcomes.
- A supporting statement from your academic advisor, if available.

Dear CERC Committee Members:
In your introduction, explain the situation and what you are petitioning. Explain what the body of your letter will include.
In the body of your letter present the supporting information for your petition. Be sure to organize your materials and demonstrate how the course being transferred meets learning goals for MSU CORE area. If including supporting documents such as letters or syllabi, note their inclusion here in this paragraph.Include relevant examples from experiences with course materials that demonstrate you have achieved the objectives of the CORE area.
Conclude your letter. Include appreciation for reviewing materials and considering petition request.

Collect the documents that support your petition. The committee may request further documentation to evaluate your petition.
These may include:
- Course syllabus from your previous institution is required
- Course description from previous course
- Other documentation showing learning outcome alignment with MSU core learning outcome
- Supporting statement from your academic advisor, if available
Tip: Your documentation should help demonstrate why the requested course substitution or waiver is appropriate.
Meet with your department academic advisor to review your petition.
Your advisor will review your materials and sign the CERC request form.
Meet with the College of Arts and Architectures Assistant Dean, Jen Dunn to review your petition.
Send your petition supporting documents to CAA Assistant Dean, Jen Dunn at jendunn@montana.edu or request a meeting to discuss your petition.
She will review your materials and sign the petition to confirm that you met with her.
Submit your completed CERC petition and supporting documents to the Office of the Registrar.
Before Submitting, make sure you have:
- Completed CERC Request Form
- Petition Letter
- Supporting Documents
- Academic advisor signature
- Assistant Dean's Signature
Important Notes:
- Make sure all required section and signatures are completed before submitting your petition.
- Cerc Petition materials must be submitted to the Registrar by the student. Best form
of submission is electronically.
- Use Adobe to combine all documents into one electronic file
- Email to Rgistrar and send a copy to the CAA Assistant Dean
- It is NOT recommended to submit paper copies to the Registrar
