Internships for Credit: A Guide for Business Students

Earn academic credit while gaining real-world experience. This guide outlines the steps, eligibility, and expectations for Jabs business students completing internships for credit through the Bracken Center.

Purpose

The purpose of an internship for credit is to gain experiential, on-site learning that enhances academic curriculum. There are two components to a successful internship:

  1. A substantive work experience related to the field of study that requires skill and judgment, supervised by a knowledgeable manager who mentors and trains.
  2. Thoughtful reflection about how the learning experience enhances, and is enhanced by, the academic curriculum.

Eligibility

  • The internship must align with the academic term, Fall, Spring, or Summer.
  • The internship must be a minimum of 3 credits to serve as upper division elective.
  • You must complete 45 work hours for 1 academic credit (135 total hours for 3 credits).
  • Prerequisites to receive upper-division academic credit for an internship:
    • ACTG 298: Consent of Instructor.
    • ACTG 498: ACTG 327.
    • ACTG 598: Admission to the MPAc Program.
    • BFIN 498: Consent of instructor.
    • BMGT 498: BMGT 335.
    • BMKT 498: BMKT 325.

Coursework and Responsibilities

Internships are graded pass/fail. To earn credit for your internship, responsibilities include:

  • Fulfill your on-site responsibilities.
  • Submit all assignments in Canvas.
  • Maintain contact with your internship advisor throughout your internship.

Register

  1. Identify an internship. You may find your own or consult with the Bracken Center.
  2. Contact the Bracken Center to receive approval for credit for the internship.
  3. Complete the learning contract in consultation with your internship supervisor.
  4. The Bracken Center will register you for internship credit.
